1. TEA TREE (MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA)

DESRIPTION: This Australian tree is used only externally and acts against the bacteria associated with acne. It is also been found that a 5% of tea tree preparation worked just as well as 5% benzoyl peroxide (a drug treatment for acne), however has got fewer side effects.
HOW TO USE: To use this oil, gently wash skin and pat it dry. Apply 5-15% dilution of the oil to the problem areas. Purchase a product that is already diluted, otherwise dilute your own oil in jojoba oil. Repeat this twice a day, morning and evening.
CAUTION: This product may cause a rash. Try a test spot first and wait 24-48 hours.

2. LAVENDER (LAVENDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA)

DESCRIPTION: The well known essential oil from this herb is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and somewhat sharp. It is used only externally. This can also be used for general skin irritations and minor burns.
HOW TO USE: To use this oil, dot it on individual blemishes with a cotton bud as needed.

3. BURDOCK (ARCTIUM LAPPA)

DESCRIPTION: This root is taken internally to promote sweating and urination. This plant is rich in minerals and actually used as a food source by many cultures.
HOW TO USE: The roots, leaves, and seeds of this herb can all be used, although you will most commonly find the roots. To make a tea, simmer 1 tablespoon of dried root in 450mm of water for 15 minutes. You can also use this tea as a face wash after it is cooled down; use a clean cloth to apply it to your skin and rinse it with cool water.
DOSAGE: 4 cups of tea per day; or 2x 400mg-500mg capsules three times per day; or 1-2 teaspoons of fluid extract three times per day.

4. DANDELION (TARAXACUM OFFICINALE)

DESCRIPTION: This root taken internally disposes of unwanted skin bacteria. In addition, it stimulates digestion, supports the liver and is moderately anti-inflammatory. The leaves of this herb, taken internally, are full of vitamins and minerals which help maintain a healthy skin.
HOW TO USE: Eat the young, fresh leaves raw in salads or steam them. To make a tea simmer 2 teaspoons of dried chopped root in ¼ litre of water for 20 minutes or steep 2 teaspoons of dried leaf in ¼ litre of hot water for 15 minutes.
DOSAGE: 3-4 cups of tea per day; or 2x 400mg-500mg capsules three times per day; or 1-2 teaspoons of fluid extract three times per day.

5. CALENDULA (CALENDULA OFFICINALIS)

DESCRIPTION: This traditional herbal remedy is for many skin problems. The orange petals are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
HOW TO USE: Make a tea by steeping 1 teaspoon of dried flowers in ¼ litre of hot water for 5-10 minutes. Strain, let it cool and apply to the face with a cotton ball or clean cloth. Otherwise, find products in supermarkets that contain the ingredient of this herb.

6. AGNUS CASTUS (VITEX AGNUS-CASTUS)

DESCRIPTION: This aids acne when it is hormone related.
DOSAGE: 40 drops of liquid extract each morning; or 1 capsule dried extract each morning.
CAUTION: Not to be used if you are pregnant!

7. OREGON GRAPEROOT (BERBERIS AQUIFOLIUM) AND GOLDENSEAL (HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS)

DESCRIPTION: Both these herbs assist in two ways. Firstly, they promote good digestion and liver function. Secondly, berberine, which both herbs contain, is a potent antibacterial herb.
HOW TO USE: Make a face wash by simmering 2 teaspoons chopped dried Oregon graperoot or goldenseal root and 450ml water for 10-15 minutes. Strain, cool and use to wash face or soak a clean cloth and use it as a compress. Otherwise, to make a face paste, mix 1 teaspoon powdered Oregon graperoot or goldenseal root, a few drops of water and 5 drops of lavender oil together. Apply this to pimples; let it dry and gently wash off.
NOTE: Oregon graperoot stains fabric.
CAUTION: Do not use either of these herbs internally when you are pregnant (External use is safe though).

8. CAMOMILE (MATRICARIA RECUTITA)

DESCRIPTION: This flowery herb contains the anti-inflammatory oil azulene, named for its blue colour, which is applied externally.
HOW TO USE: Make a skin wash by steeping 1 tablespoon of dried flowers in ¼ litre of hot water for 10 minutes. Strain and apply it with a cotton ball or clean cloth. The essential oil can also be dabbed on to blemishes. Or else, look for products that contain chamomile or azulene ingredients.
